Olive oil may help prevent breast cancer

There has been a lot of excitement about the health benefits of olive oil. Not only is olive oil light and delicious tasting, it also has positive health benefits which may help you live a healthier and longer life. Researchers have been investigating olive oil for its breast cancer prevention properties, reported Houston Methodist Hospital on Jan. 22, 2014.

A primary component of olive oil known as hydroxytyrosol has been the subject of a Houston Methodist study of women who are at increased risk of developing breast cancer. This is the first of its kind study in the United States which focuses on the changes in breast density after one year of treatment. Breast density and breast cancer risk have been linked in recent studies. The primary goal of this study is to show a significant decrease in breast density with olive oil consumption.

Tejal Patel, M.D., breast medical oncologist with Houston Methodist Cancer Center, who led this study, said, “We know there is a correlation between breast density and breast cancer. A decrease in density of one percent can potentially translate into a nearly two percent reduced risk of developing breast cancer.” The hope of the researchers is to be able to offer women a healthy supplement which can help lower the risk of breast cancer.

Already prevention of some breast cancer seems possible and these researchers want to offer even more. In this study 50 premenopausal and 50 postmenopausal women will be enrolled. Each of the patients will take one 25 mg hydroxytyrosol capsule for 12 months and undergo checkups every three months. It has been shown in previous research that olive oil provides many health benefits which include lowering the risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and possibly stroke.

The myriad of health benefits of olive oil make it one of the most indispensable ingredients of a healthy diet, reports The Olive Oil Source. Olive oil is naturally packed with monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. Aside from being able to help lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, extra virgin olive oil also offers a wide range of anti-inflammatory benefits which can have a positive impact on illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and asthma. It looks like olive oil is a good choice for salads and cooking.
