Old Vegas is still going strong at Champagnes

A throwback to Old Vegas, the darker and seedier party of Vegas is what Champagne’s still offers. A true vintage Las Vegas establishment right down to the gold flaked wallpaper from the early 70’s. Champagne’s is located at 3557 S. Maryland Pkwy, right across from the Boulevard Mall. A very small parking lot confuses most but 100 people have filled this joint on hundreds of different nights.

A hole in the wall that has been around since the interior of the joint was in style and still offers drinks at prices almost from that era. Red leather booths, peeling velvet wallpaper and dimmed lighting give the place a true, dark and intimate feel. This is the best old Vegas dive bar in Sin City. There are no dart machines or pool tables cluttering up the place. This is a place that one comes for serious cocktail consumption.

De Niro and Scorsese wanted to film part of the movie Casino at Champagne’s but the owner insisted that the locals be part of the shots, and they declined. Joe Pesci’s part in the movie, based on the life of Tony Spilotro that hung out at Champagnes religiously. There are pictures behind the bar of celebrities and regulars just hanging out with some cocktails. A true locals joint where celebrities could and can go to get away from the limelight and attention. Drinks are cheap and they’re poured to the top of the glass, there isn’t a jigger in the house.

Friday and Saturday Night is Champagnes is full to the gills with Karaoke. Being right up the street from UNLV, it is packed with tone-deaf college kids trying to sing anything and everything. Every other night of the week, the jukebox, filled with more Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, than anything from the last 20 years, is a hit. You wont find $12.00 Appletinis or 120 ounce margarita glasses, but you will get doubles and triples as normal pours and for about five bucks. A fixture of this place is Uncle Mike down at the end of the bar by the back door, buy him a drink and tell him Kevin sent you.
