Butterflies are the secret to get through early levels of hunter in old school RuneScape, despite them giving only 24 hunter experience per catch. Here is why catching ruby harvest is the best way to train low hunter levels in old school RuneScape.
RuneScape players primarily have tracking and bird catching available when starting out. They should if possible get level 15 on crimson swifts, as they are snared more often than the higher level birds.
At level 15, there is the choice between waiting over a half minute for a bird that may or may not be snared for 40-60 experience or catching butterflies that can be caught as quickly as it takes to click on them then right click release the jar. Although the butterflies give less experience each, the experience adds up faster. Rather than standing around waiting for a snare to not catch a bird, the hunter experience is guaranteed and dependent on the RuneScape player's speed, not the number of traps allowed.
Bring a butterfly net and several butterfly jars. Bird snares may also be brought, but some old school RuneScape players find it faster to just hunt butterflies without having to keep an eye on a bird snare. At 23 hunter, wild kebbits can be caught. For these, bring an ax in order to chop the wood for setting the trap. As they spawn in the area with ruby harvest, players can catch the butterflies while waiting on the kebbit.
