Old First Concerts to host Opera Academy of California events

Next month the Opera Academy of California will launch its Emerging Artist Program.  Under the guiding supervision of Director Yefim Maizel, the next generation of opera singers will participate in the production of three full-length operas:  Emmanuel Chabrier’s L’étoile, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo, and Mark Adamo’s Little Women.  These projects will be supplemented by a series of seven master classes and three concert recitals of selected arias.

Through a partnership with Old First Concerts, the master classes and aria recitals will be presented at Old First Church.  The aria recitals will take place at 4 PM on Sunday, June 26, and Sunday, July 10, and at 7 PM on Wednesday, July 27.  The master classes are scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday, June 21, 7 PM:  San Francisco Opera Center Director, Sheri Greenawald
  • Thursday, June 23, 7 PM:  Coach for the Santa Fe and Metropolitan Operas, Erie Mills
  • Monday, June 27, 7 PM:  Former Director of the San Francisco Opera, Lotfi Mansouri
  • Wednesday, June 29, 7 PM:  Metropolitan Opera mezzo, Catherine Cook
  • Wednesday, July 6, 7 PM:  World-renowned mezzo, Dolora Zajick
  • Saturday, July 16, 2 PM:  Metropolitan Opera Guest Director, Yefim Maizel
  • Wednesday, July 27, 7 PM:  artist to be announced

All master classes will be three hours in duration.  These sessions can be particularly informative, even to general audiences, as a opportunity to see both vocalists and stage directors demonstrate their respective crafts through coaching.

Both the recitals and master classes will be presented as special Old First Concerts events, taking place in the Old First Church at 1751 Sacramento Street (on the southeast corner of Van Ness Avenue).  General admission is $17 with a special $14 rate for students and seniors.  Children under twelve are admitted free.  Further information may be obtained by calling 415-474-1608.  The Opera Academy of California has its own Web site and may also be reached by calling 415-642-0176.
