Oklahoma State wrestlers beat Iowa in battle of heavyweights

No. 2 Oklahoma State got some key wins down the stretch and beat No. 4 Iowa, 18-12, in a wrestling showdown in Stillwater Sunday, Jan.13, 2012.

Iowa won the first three matches and grabbed an early lead. Oklahoma State won the last five matches and pulled away for the win. Eight of the 10 Oklahoma State wrestlers are ranked in the top 15 nationally, and seven of 10 for Iowa are ranked.

Several of the bouts featured matches between top-10 wrestlers. The only upset on the day was when No. 15 Chris Chionuma of OSU beat Iowa's No. 10 Ethen Lofthouse 3-2 at the 184 weight class. That tied the dual, and Oklahoma State won the next two to seal the win.

Both teams have dominated the sport since it started in an organized manner in 1928. Oklahoma State has not lost to Iowa in the last three years. The two teams have won 57 of the 81 national championships in wrestling in the last 84 years. There was no tournament in 1943-45.

Oklahoma State has won 34 national titles and Iowa has 23. Iowa state is a distant third at seven and Oklahoma has five.

Last year Oklahoma State became the all-time leader in dual wrestling match victories and is only the second team to have more than 1,000 wins. The Cowboy now have an all-time record of 1,031-114-23. Iowa State is secon at 1,016-299-20. Iowa is fourth with an all time record of 919-220-31.
