Oklahoma State gets fifth in a row, blasts Texas

Oklahoma State cruised to a 72-59 win over Texas Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 in Austin. The win was welcome after three consecutive games that came down to the final minute, if not the final play.

Oklahoma State pulled ahead early and gradually pulled away with tough defense. The Cowboys led by as many as 19 in the second half after leading 29-22 at the half.

Texas has been struggling and is now 10-13 and 2-8 in the Big 12. Oklahoma State rises to 17-5 and 7-3 in the Big 12. Thanks to Oklahoma beating Kansas Saturday, the Cowboys are now just one game out of first place in the league. The Cowboys beat Kansas on Feb. 2.

Marcus Smart scored 23 for Oklahoma State. He had 12 in the second half, and led a run with 10 minutes left that essentially put the game away. He helped win two state championship games in the gym where Texas plays.

"I have a great feeling for this gym," Smart said. "If felt great coming back."

Markel Brown added 17 points and Le'Bryan Nash had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State shot 32 percent from the field in the first half and 44 percent in the second half. The Cowboys struggled with the 3-pointer, making just four of 16.

Texas shot 39 percent for the game and was 1-18 from the 3-point line.

Oklahoma State plays at Texas Tech next Wednesday. Next Saturday, Feb. 16 the Cowboys host Oklahoma in the Bedlam series game. Earlier this season Oklahoma State lost to Oklahoma at Norman, 77-68, and beat Texas Tech in Stillwater 79-45.
