The Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. the Florida State Seminoles was tonight in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium. The Pokes were 17-point underdogs going into the game against the defending national champions. The pre-game was not without controversy too because a group of OSU students came under fire with an offensive sign about the Trail of Tears, according to an August 30 Sports Illustrated report.

The sign appeared on ESPN's College GameDay on Saturday morning, and it immediately caused a negative firestorm on social media. Ultimately, the Oklahoma State University Twitter account tweeted,

"OSU does not condone the insensitive sign shown at today's GameDay event and have requested that it be removed."

Even with this awful sign controversy, the OSU Cowboys showed up to play, and the day's earlier negative publicity did not seem to affect the team's game plan. The first quarter was rocky for the underdogs, but the Pokes took the momentum going into halftime. Yes, they were still behind, but the score was close. Much closer than anybody had expected.

OSU came out and held their own in the game's second half too. Twice the Pokes were within 3 points, which is something Florida State has not experienced in the second half recently. The Seminoles were clearly fighting for their playoff lives in the first game of the season, which was supposed to be a huge blowout!

The final score in Arlington was Florida State 37, Oklahoma State 31. The 'Noles squeaked by with a meager 6 point win, and the Cowboys easily covered the 17 point spread. Plus, the young OSU team got the nation's attention with their unexpected play against the number 1 team.

Ultimately, today ended on a high point for Oklahoma State even though the sign controversy marred the day. Hopefully students and others have learned that the Trail of Tears is certainly nothing to take lightly or joke about. The sign was offensive, and should never happen again.
