An Oklahoma shooting killed an Australian college athlete this week, devastating the local community and leaving 3 teens the prime suspects in the gun violence incident, the CS Monitor reports this Wednesday, Aug. 21. The tragic shooting — which was said to be done in an attempt to ease the boredom of summer in Oklahoma — has shocked the US public.
The Oklahoma shooting occurred when 3 teenagers shot and killed an Australian baseball player at the college level as part of a random targeting that day. Christopher Lane of Melbourne was visiting the US and taking class at an Oklahoma school when he was allegedly gunned down for just the “sport” of it, prosecutors alleged.
Two of the 3 teens are currently being charged with murder. According to the prosecutor in the case, the teen boys are nothing more than “thugs” who shot visiting Aussie Christopher Lane in the back along a road in the city of Duncan.
None of the Oklahoma shooting suspects had any justification or even motive to open fire on Lane; they were said to simply think the shooting was “all a joke.”
James Francis Edwards, age 15, and Chancey Allen Luna, 16, are now being charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of the Australian athlete. Michael Dewayne Jones, age 17, is being accused of using a vehicle that was involved with a weapon discharge and being an accessory to murder.
The two other teens will face life imprisonment without a chance for parole if they are convicted of the Oklahoma shooting and murder charge.
"I'm appalled," said the county prosecutor after the initial hearing this week. "This is not supposed to happen in this community."
According to the report, Luna was sitting in the back of a car when he pulled the gun’s trigger of a revolver, shooting Lane down as the Australian visitor was walking down the street. Edwards was in the passenger seat in the time, while Jones was driving the car at the time.
What is your input on this devastating Oklahoma shooting? Another source added that the gun violence-related incident has even led some Australian officials to ask for a boycott of US tourism.
