On Thursday August 22, according to CBSsports.com Bob Stoops named his starting quarterback for their first game. Here’s a hint. It’s not the popular back up from the last two years, Blake Bell. Instead, Stoops went with Trevor Knight to start against Louisiana-Monroe.
In the past two years, Bell set the world on fire with his bruising running style. He all but supplanted Landry Jones in short yardage and goal line situations. Blake Bell tallied 24 rushing touchdowns over those two years, and it was thought to be a foregone conclusion that he would become the starter after last season.
However, like many top tier programs, Oklahoma recruits numerous quality quarterbacks into their system yearly. This decision did not come lightly as ULM should be a tough opponent for the Oklahoma Sooners next week.
With the news of Blake Bell as the number two guy, he will likely continue his role as the short yardage signal caller, if Oklahoma struggles in the red zone.
Unfortunately for a couple of lists, Bell was hyped as a preseason dark horse for the Heisman trophy and was placed on the most intriguing quarterback list. You can even see the cautious optimism around the “Belldozer’s” future at Oklahoma.
