The annual survey of winter birds begins today, January 9th, according to a Twitter release from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife.OK Wildlife Dept. ‏@OKWildlifeDept 50m "Today's the day! Get your bird watching on w/ the 2014 Winter Bird Feeder Survey! http://ow.ly/sq6pT".

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Survey includes a scrolling gallery index http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/OKWinterBirds/winterbirdsurvey.htm of bird photos, so that names of birds and their differing traits can be easily reviewed. Each snap shows some profile information about the bird. In cooperation with the Audubon Society, people all across the United States are asked at intervals to consider the birds at their home feeder in their yard, tracking populations and migration habits to a certain degree.

This is a fun thing to do as a family, because it teaches observation, categories and documentation of findings. Birdwatching is a free skill that can be an enjoyable diversion or serious lifelong hobby.

Oklahoma has a variety of wildlife preserves statewide, noted by Oklahoma State Parks. http://www.travelok.com/state_parks
