Unfortunately this morning on my commute to work my predictions regarding roadway safety became all to real with a 3 car pile up at 26th and North Classen in Uptown Oklahoma City. Blocked all South Bound traffic in the Asian District, OKC.
The glitch that got my stomach is that this is a blind corner. Still.
In October, 2010 I was thrown from my bike by a vehicle pretty much in the exact same place, because this guy came off N. Classen Boulevard at 40 mph and crossed in front of me when I was in the intersection, behind the intersection.
Unfortunately, I still remember the gasping and PSTD response from the Grand House delivery guy before and after. He saw me go over the hill and could see the car below the hill, which I could not see. He knew I was going to get hit.
The Mom talking to her kid who was complaining that their better destination was delayed by the fact I was laying on my back unable to determine what part of my person hurt worse. .... the middle of the road swearing silently to myself. The elderly guy whose car was involved spoke virtually no English and appeared to have no idea what was wrong. Sigh. I truly did not need another problem that day. Or today. http://www.examiner.com/article/ounce-of-prevention-better-than-pounded-...
I met a number of City government and non-profit OKC people after that, and spent a fair amount of time trying to explain what I understood to be the problem for THAT exchange of streets, sidewalks and intersections and then others.
Only then did I realize that I passed two of these daily and for the foreseeable future would be walking or biking these daily.
The original Oklahoma City response to the intersection was to mark a crosswalk E/W across North Classen indicating the presence of an unusual intersection, Oklahoma City University and the pedestrian crossing. A set of yellow signs appeared there, and then another around the corner on the West side of North Classen on 26th. No yield sign, barrier or drop in speed was called for from the cars coming off North Classen Boulevard, Southbound. Then the Classen crosswalk signs came down. And time passed. And Fabio Capricio and I talked about that and other problems.
So. This 26th Street intersection is heavy with business, elderly, students, disabled, families, vehicles, pedestrians and bikers.
Same as that intersection at 46th and North Classen Boulevard. http://www.examiner.com/article/okc-mayoral-campaign-2014-maps3-sidewalk...
And before 2015 is out, that twin intersection is going to be jumping, as the new Sunbeam Counseling Center will be completed, right there at the corner of 14th and North Classen Boulevard. Jumping with kids and elderly and disabled. It's where the other traffic triangle is. Currently, there are accidents at 14th and North Classen Boulevard often due to the poor directional control of traffic at the convergence of North Classen, 14th, North Western and 13th. I am at the window of my office calling for professional aid second to traffic accidents regularly there.
Ok and in case you are wondering about that Mayoral reference in 2010.........when I returned to Oklahoma City, I played a professional marketing game that ultimately landed me a spot as the Mayor of Oklahoma City... with MerchantCircle, a California based internet marketing company. http://www.examiner.com/article/make-me-the-monkey-s-mayor-2-winslow-win.... LOL. No pull to fix the above.
I think the MAPS3 and street safety questions I have are :
1.) Why do these traffic patterns remain if even to the untrained eye disaster looms?
2.) What is the reported, and therefore the repaired problem.... a) is it accurate, b) does it match the complaint or information provided by the public, c) what are all the ways to solve the problem, d.) did what was applied solve the problem? e) rinse repeat... do it again until it is truly safe.
3.) Why don't we have super white fat painted bike lanes that could be used both for protected pedestrian circumstances and as bike paths... wouldn't this be cheaper than walks in areas where we cannot get them and better than nothing? ( for the 46th problem) and why can't that street be blocked from traffic merging off of N Classen at either location, because they present the risk and remain unfettered.
4.) When will life heavy circumstances outweigh remote areas for attentions to City planning.
5.) How many times do I have to endure man made death traps created by my city or other area government that doesn't seem to understand causality, measured response and audit for success or failure, adjustment and repeat until success. Why is the public always expected to wait for another problem or an "hire an attorney" in order to get to better? Dysfunction is dysfunction. There's no other way to slice it.
It is BTW equally trying to WATCH it happen to someone else. Leaving my house to attend to my life shouldn't be an extreme risk regarding a health issue, a safety issue, a legal issue and a peace of mind issue.
