Oklahoma State wrestling will host the 2012 National Duals Championships next Sunday, Feb. 19, welcoming Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa, the other three finalists of this weekend's Mat Mayhem Regional Qualifying Championships, the host school announced Sunday evening.
The Championships will be held at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla. Semifinals are set for 2 p.m.; finals will be at 6 p.m.
In the semifinals, No. 1 seed Oklahoma State will face No. 4 Illinois, while second-seeded Iowa takes on its rival to the north, No. 3 seed Minnesota.
Three of the four finalists are Big Ten schools. The exception is Oklahoma State, who won the last of the four Regionals in its home gym, defeating Ohio State, 25-6, denying the Buckeyes' attempt to make it an all-Big Ten National Duals Championships.
Minnesota earned its place among the "final four" by beating Missouri, 26-7, at the Rutgers Regional Saturday. Illinois defeated Cornell, 19-16, at the Cornell Regional Sunday. Later that day, Iowa topped Oregon State, 22-14, at the Iowa State Regional.
How Oklahoma State was selected for the Championships
Oklahoma State was awarded the 2012 National Duals Championships over Minnesota -- the two programs still in the running for hosting the event -- thanks to a combination of factors, according to Mike Moyer, president of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), organizers of the National Duals. In an article by Andrew Hipps for InterMatWrestle.com, Moyer said that the fairest decision was to award the highest-seeded team with the hosting job. Moyer added that financial ramifications were a factor.
