In addition to learning floral designs at the classroom, some students want to experience actual floral decorations at a wedding party or working as a floral designer at a floral shop. Once in a while I try to give opportunities to our students so that they can have actual experience as a floral decorator or assistant floral designer.
Wedding floral decoration service is one of popular opportunities and students show interest in participating in this kind of event as a flower arranger. However most workers and floral decorators are pressed for the time and they have pretty hard schedule on the day of wedding. If their skill is not sufficient enough to make floral decorations in a timely manner, they are like a ball and chain to experienced decorators rather than helping them. Therefore I can bring reasonably experienced students to the project location.
The other day, I sent a student to a local florist that requested our school to send a student to help make a Valentine’s Day flower arrangements. As a matter of fact, there was a floral shop’s supervisor who checked the arrangement each designer made and depending on the necessity she will change or modify the flower arrangements. Quite frankly speaking our student’s arrangements were never modified or changed, which means her decorations were good and satisfactory to the supervisor.
By way of having actual experience in the actual job field as a floral decorator, they can understand if or not their skill is enough to do an actual job and what should be improved in order to work as a floral designer in the actual business field. This is a kind of one day OJT (On the Job Training). After they get a job as a floral designer at a florist, they may get this kind of OJT which is very effective for them to have practical experiences as a floral designer and also a store clerk as well.
The more OJT they get, the better skill they can earn. Therefore it is so important for students to earn a minimum required level of skill enough to have on-the-job-training. If they really want to work at a florist or really want to run their own floral shop, it MAY be worthwhile for them to get OJT even for free (no salary). People who are very enthusiastic for achieving their goal in business often get a job without getting paid because they know quite well they can have priceless experiences in earning skill and knowledge required for running a business. We can find this kind of story not only in the floral designing industry but also in some other business fields quite often.
Again after earning reasonable skills of floral designs at a classroom, it may be a very good idea to work as a volunteer or intern for a while just for the purpose of becoming more knowledgeable and experienced through the actual job in the working field.
