According to the Canadian Press, Calgary-raised Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves for the shutout and Banff, Alberta native Ryan Smyth scored twice on Friday as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 2-0.
With the win, the Oilers improved to 13-24-3, while the Flames dropped to 14-18-6.
It was a rare shutout for the Oilers, when you consider the fact they have given up a National Hockey League high of 135 goals against after the first 40 games this season.
The Oilers also got some lucky bounces. It appeared that Flames defenseman Mark Giordano scored in the first period, but it was waived off because Joe Colborne made contact with Dubnyk. Giordano was snake bitten again in the third period when his slap shot hit the crossbar.
The Flames will next play host to the Vancouver Canucks in a Pacific Division battle on Sunday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Please note the different start time of 5:30 p.m. local.
