Oil spill update: Nation optimistic as oil flow stops, President Obama urges caution

As the nation rejoices that the nearly three month oil spill flow has finally stopped, officials state that caution is advised, including President Obama. BP has begun the well integrity tests to determine whether the cap will hold and prevent leaks.

The next 24-48 hours will be critical but so far it appears that things are going well. Though the oil spill appears to be temporarily fixed, it is not a permanent fix. The relief wells must be installed.

President Obama spoke about the progress but warned caution. He said, “The new cap is good news. Either we will be able to use it to stop the flow, or we will be able to use it to capture almost all of the oil until the relief well is done.

But we're not going to know for certain which approach makes sense until additional data is in. And all the American people should rest assured that all of these decisions will be based on the science and what's best for the people of the Gulf.”

The well integrity tests consist of pressure readings and ensuring that internal pressure remains above 6,000 pounds per square inch. The latest numbers were approximately 6,700 and the number is rising which is a good sing. Experts say they would like the numbers to reach approximately 8,000.

If the pressure holds and does not damage the surrounding ground, the blowout preventer should remain intact. The next 48-hours are critical, but there is no doubt that the nation is exuberant that the oil flow has finally ceased.
