Oil spill update: BP announces Gulf claims payments over $200 million

BP announced on Friday that Gulf claims payments are over $200 million. BP said that $201 million has been paid to residents and business that have been impacted by the Gulf Coast oil spill.

The payments were made to more than 32,000 claimants over the past 10 weeks, said BP in a statement. According to BP, fisherman have received the largest amount of claims money with a current total of $32 million. Shrimpers come behind fisherman with a total of $18 million in claims paid. Other occupations make up an approximate  $77 million that’s been paid.

Speaking about the 61,000 claims that haven’t been paid, BP said that they were submitted to BP but lacked enough information for filing. They also said that 13,000 claimants have been unreachable by phone and they will send letters to those claimants.

According to BP 48,000 people have filed claims but failed to provide documentation to support the claims.

They began sending letters to those claimants this week. The letters are sent in batches of 5,000 per day and begin with the oldest clams first.

BP announced that 17,000 claims are currently being evaluated to see if they qualify for payment and 4,000 claims were duplicates, contained erroneous information, or have been withdrawn.

Darryl Willis with the BP claims team stated, “We strongly encourage those who have not yet sent in their supporting documents to do so. BP is committed to paying all legitimate claims. As soon as we have the information, we will process them.” Darryl Willis continued, “We encourage people to reach out to us if they believe we have not contacted them in a reasonable amount of time.”

BP also announced that within the past two weeks they’ve received 22,000 claims that are undergoing evaluation.
