Oil Spill: Seep found near oil well, possible leak, BP, Feds clash over containment cap

There may be trouble ahead for the new containment cap that has successfully stopped the flow of oil from the broken oil well. Testing has been conducted every 6 hours since the capping of the well and pressure has been measured. Today, a federal official spoke on the condition of anonymity and stated that there is a possible seep in the well.

Additionally, methane gas may have been seen escaping. If the oil well is seeping, a leak would be present and the new containment cap would not hold the oil in as was hoped. The official spoke with the Associated Press but an announcement by BP or the Obama administration regarding a seep or leak has not been made.

Vote in poll: Is BP doing a good job?

According to reports by the AP, BP and Feds are not in agreement as the federal government wants more oversight. Additionally, government officials are concerned that if the cap remains in place until the permanent relief wells are drilled the oil well may become unstable.

BP does not want to remove the cap and wants it to stay in place. BP and the Obama administration are offering two different views on whether or not the oil well’s cap will be removed.
