Oil spill recovery update: Obama Administration bills BP $99.7 million
The BP oil spill recovery and response is expensive and today, the Obama Administration sent its fourth bill to BP to clean up the catastrophe. Today’s bill cost $99.7 million.
The Obama Administration has said from the beginning of the oil spill disaster that BP would be held financially responsible for recovery efforts.
In a statement released by the Deepwater Horizon Response, the Obama Administration spelled out exactly what BP is expected to pay, “As a responsible party, BP is financially responsible for all costs associated with the response to the spill, including efforts to stop the leak at its source, reduce the spread of oil, protect the shoreline and mitigate damages, as well as long term recovery efforts to ensure that all individuals and communities impacted by the spill are made whole.
To provide full transparency of the ongoing efforts and to ensure that the American public is not held accountable for the costs of response and recovery activities, the Federal Government bills BP and the other responsible parties regularly for costs incurred by the Federal On-Scene Coordinator to support Federal, State, and local response efforts and ensure the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund is reimbursed on an ongoing basis.”
Many across the Gulf continue to wait in frustration for payment on their BP claims and today, Florida Governor Charlie Crist submitted a request for an additional $50 million in funding to attract tourism to Florida. BP denied the request.
The Obama administration has previously billed BP $123.3 million, BP and other responsible parties have paid that total in full.
