One year ago, in the Gulf of Mexico 11 men died and oil flowed freely into the Gulf. Helpless to do anything but watch as the NOAA maps tracking the oil kept expanding, and expanding...and expanding. Pictures of oily dead fish, pictures, oiled helpless birds, and dolphins jumping and frolicking in water that surely wasn't safe for them could be seen on TV every night. Did consciousness about our environment increase? Is there going to be an influx of students who watched what happened with horror, and were moved to begin studies in environmental degree programs?
Hopefully so.
At Chandler Gilbert Community College, some students will graduate soon with an Associates of Arts Degree in environmental sustainability. General required classes along with classes like "Environmental Ethics", "Environmental Biology", "Economics of Natural Resources, Population, and the Environment", and "Geological Disasters" are taught.
Many of these students will transfer to larger universities to complete their education. It is too late to do much about the oil in the gulf, but not too late to look ahead.
