Tuesday evening, oil rig survivors told CNN that on the day of the explosion an argument ensued between a BP executive and an official from Transocean about taking a shortcut to continue drilling on the oil rig, and the BP executive won the argument much to the opposition of the rig workers.
According to CNN, “The BP official wanted workers to replace heavy mud, used to keep the well's pressure down, with lighter seawater to help speed a process that was costing an estimated $750,000 a day and was already running five weeks late.”
According to rig survivors BP won the disagreement because, "He basically said, 'Well, this is how it's gonna be.' "
"That's what the big argument was about," added Daniel Barron III.
One of the men who presumably died during the explosion was chief driller Dewey Revette and he expressed his concerns and his resistance to his co-workers.
"I don't ever remember doing this," they said, according to Barron.
"I think that's why Dewey was so reluctant to try to do it," Barron said, "because he didn't feel it was the right way to have things done."
The oil rig workers said that BP frequently cut corners without regard to safety, and that it was understood that you would be fired if you raised concern about safety issues. See the CNN interviews of the oil rig survivors below.
