Ohio State’s weakness may help them in Madison

It’s clear that Ohio State’s offensive line is consistent in two areas. They seem to pass blocking well however they cannot run block for anything. This was apparent in Ohio State’s 38-10 win over Indiana. The Buckeyes gained just 130 yards on the ground against one of the Big Ten’s worst defenses.

Going into this week, you think this would be a cause for concern.

For one, Wisconsin is much more physical up front. If they cannot run much against Indiana logic dictates, they won’t do anything against the Badgers.

With that said, do the Buckeyes need a dominant run game to win this week?

The answer is no. If they try to do this, they’ll play right into Wisconsin’s hands. The Badgers want to play a smash mouth style of football. They are equipped to run the ball and use this to open up the passing game. While the Badgers have the players to be explosive, they tend to use their bread and butter to win games.

If the Buckeyes think they’re going to go up there and use the running game as their main weapon, they should expect to lose.

Ohio State needs to unleash a Rose Bowl type of attack. Run the no-huddle offense, stretch Wisconsin’s defense wide with short passes and run up and down the field. If this game becomes a shootout, the Badgers’ offense isn’t equipped for that type game, especially against the Buckeye defense. Besides, it’s easier to wear defenses down when you do not allow them to substitute. Which in turn, may open up the run game.

Ultimately, their weakness in the run game may force the coaching staff to break tendency. This worked for them in Pasadena and it may work for them again in Madison.
