Ohio State's Miles Avery resigns; Blaine Wilson, Doug Stibel will take over

Ohio State men's coach Miles Avery, who helmed the Buckeyes men's program for the past 12 years and guided Paul and Morgan Hamm through 2004 and 2008, has resigned from his job effective immediately, the University reported today.

Assistant coaches Doug Stibel and Blaine Wilson will share interim head coaching duties for the year, Ohio State announced in the same press release.

Ohio State, which produced 2010 World team member Brandon Wynn, said only that Avery, who first joined the program as an assistant coach in 1989, left to pursue "other opportunities."

The university does intend on hiring someone as Avery's permanent replacement, and plans on conducting a national search during the season. One has to wonder if they can really do better than Wilson, a Columbus native who is also the most decorated Buckeye gymnast in program history.

OSU last won an NCAA title in 2001. The team is ranked sixth in the men's gymnastics pre-season coaches poll.

If Blaine was part of a group of gymnasts who lived on campus during the summer of 1993, then he as well as his 'friends' were gang rapists. Several gymnasts from the sumer of 93 committed the crime of date rape and were left unpunished mainly due to their OSU rankings. Myself being one of them. Almost 20 years later and it still haunts me! They should know that it's not right and have to pay!

Anon, I'm terribly sorry that happened to you. FYI, Blaine joined the OSU team as a freshman for the 1994 season, meaning he would have been a freshman during the fall of 1993. I have no idea whether he lived on campus during the summer of 1993, however. -- Blythe
