Ohio State is the new No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches Polls

Buckeye Nation received some great news today. Following Alabama’s 35-21 loss to South Carolina, the Buckeyes became the new No.1. In the AP Poll, they received 34 first place votes. Oregon lands at number two with 15 first place votes. Rounding out the top five are Boise State, TCU and Nebraska.

Here is a look at the AP Top 25 Poll for October 10:

  1. Ohio State (34)
  2. Oregon (15)
  3. Boise State (8)
  4. TCU (1)
  5. Nebraska (1)
  6. Oklahoma (2)
  7. Auburn
  8. Alabama
  9. LSU
  10. South Carolina
  11. Utah
  12. Arkansas
  13. Michigan State
  14. Stanford
  15. Iowa
  16. Florida State
  17. Arizona
  18. Wisconsin

  24. Oregon State

What does the number one ranking mean for the Buckeyes?

To be honest, it doesn’t mean much as this is only mid-season. Ohio State has six games remaining and regardless of their ranking, they will receive each team’s best shot. While the national perception of the Buckeyes isn’t great, if they take care of business they’ll have the opportunity to change people’s minds.

Other poll observations:

Why is Alabama ahead of South Carolina? In these scenarios, the head-to-head winner should be the higher ranked team. It isn’t to say it will stay like that, but for the time being, it’s fair.

It surprises me that Oregon received more first place votes than Boise State. No offense to the Ducks, but Boise is a more complete team. To be honest, they may be more complete than the Buckeyes.

Michigan didn’t last long in the top 25. Their road doesn’t get any easier either. They host Iowa this week then travel to Happy Valley for a night game the following week.

The Big Ten has three teams in the 13-18 range. Both Wisconsin and Iowa are underrated and time should prove that. Michigan State may be a dark horse in the national title picture. They arguably have three tough games left (road games at Iowa, Northwestern and Penn State). If they beat Iowa, it will propel them to the top ten and from there the domino effect could be in their favor.

What are your thoughts on the poll? Do you think the Buckeyes should be number one?
