Earlier this week, I asked Buckeye Nation on what areas Ohio State needs to improve in. Not surprisingly, I received many interesting responses. In attempt to shed some light on problem areas, here’s a look at some of the Buckeyes’ weaknesses.
The first that comes to mind is special teams. Many are concerned and rightfully so. How are they so bad in this area?
These units especially the coverage teams have some of the toughest assignments in football. They’re required to run 40-50 yards full speed, stay in their lanes, then within seconds, break down, shed blockers and make tackles. When you look back at the film on all of the big returns, the Buckeyes had players in position to make the plays. The problem is they were trying to arm tackle or they over pursued. Special teams are the same as the offense and the defense, they need all 11 guys working together and so far, that isn’t happening. To me it looks like a group of players trying to make the highlight reel instead of helping each other out. Unless the coaches emphasize discipline and teamwork, this is going to be a long season for the coverage teams.
Another area of concern is the run game. The Buckeyes have good running backs but during the last two games, neither has been able to gain any momentum. Why are they struggling?
The Buckeyes have had a history of slow starts. If last season is any indication, the Buckeyes should improve over the course of the season. Similarly, it would help if the coaching staff would call plays that benefit the running styles of the backs. Lining up in two tight end formations and running between the tackles with Brandon Saine isn’t doing him any favors. Most of Ohio State’s backs run better in zone read plays. As the season progresses, it’ll be interesting to see if Jordan Hall and Jamaal Berry receive more looks. Both have been impressive in the return game and may inject some excitement.
Finally, can the secondary survive the season?
It seems like everyone has had injuries. C.J. Barnett suffered a season ending knee injury. Orhian Johnson missed most of camp with a calf injury. Both Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence endured injuries. This is just to name a few. Obviously, it creates a lot of concern, as depth becomes an issue. Luckily, the Buckeyes recruit well and the coaching staff is well aware of the problem. They’ll make adjustments as necessary. Keep in mind the Buckeyes have one of the best front seven in the country. This should help if Ohio State needs to use less experienced players.
Overall, I’ve been impressed with Buckeye Nation’s ability to find weaknesses in this team. I know it may sound like they're knit picking, but they also know what the Buckeyes need to do to be a championship team.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.
