Ohio State football: The focus needs to be on Michigan not Urban Meyer

See also

Urban Meyer fever has swept Buckeye Nation. First, a television station in Orlando reported Urban and Ohio State have agreed to a deal in principle. Then today the Columbus Dispatch confirmed the agreement. The stories have ignited the web and have many Buckeyes fans thinking of a possible future with Meyer at the helm.

There’s only one problem; the current season isn’t over.

While I’m just as excited as anyone about what Urban can bring to the program, the current team has a big task at hand and that’s to beat Michigan. The last thing they need is more distractions.

There’s nothing more distracting to a team than a potential coaching change. The players are well aware of all the reports going on right now. The news does nothing but throw up more obstacles in front of a team that has already had its share of challenges.

While in the long term the Urban Meyer coming to Ohio State talk will likely pan out, the earliest an official announcement will come is next week. For the time being, the Buckeyes have a chance to win their eighth straight over Michigan. Doesn’t that warrant more attention now?

Ohio State in many ways can salvage their season with a win over Michigan. Not only would it send their seniors out undefeated against the maize and blue it would also eliminate any hopes of Michigan making a BCS bowl. That is huge. If the Buckeyes embrace their underdog role and keep their focus, they have a chance to ruin Michigan’s season.

Then the Urban Meyer madness can begin.
