This was not a repeat of the 2008 game. Instead, the Buckeyes took care of business defeating Ohio 43-7. Here are some observations from the game.

Let me preface this by saying it’s hard to derive much from these types of games. Ohio is an average football team and it was clear from the beginning this wasn’t going to be a contest. The Buckeyes came out swinging and Ohio was not able to answer.

With that said, Ohio State’s defense continues to be impressive.

This may be the best defense Ohio State has had in some time. Their speed especially on vertical plays is astounding. Ross Homan filled the gaps well and the front four made it difficult for Ohio to gain any offensive rhythm. The defense continues to be opportunistic forcing the Bobcats to commit five turnovers.

The offense also had a good performance.

Terrelle Pryor started out the day well, but he still shows tendencies from his past. At the end of the half, Pryor missed a pass to Dane Sanzenbacher then threw an interception. Still, it’s hard to knit pick his performance. Pryor moved out the pocket well and made good plays by selecting the correct reads. He finished the day with 235 passing yards and two touchdowns. He ran also ran for 35 yards and another touchdown.

I thought it was interesting the Buckeyes tried to score at the end of the first half. In the past, the coaching staff would call running plays to drain the clock. Instead, they used this time to practice their two-minute offense. While it resulted in an interception, you have to like their choice of trying to take advantage of the situation.

Meanwhile, their special teams continue to be puzzling.

While it didn’t count, Ohio ran back a kickoff for a touchdown. They also blocked a punt. Eventually, these mistakes will cost Ohio State big. The Buckeyes are a good football team but they are beatable. These constant breakdowns show there are problems. I don’t know if it’s in the scheme or personnel or a combination of both, but it’s inexcusable to have this many breakdowns in three games.

Now let’s move on to news that is more cheerful.

Stat of the game: Pryor outgained Ohio in total yards 270 to 163.
