Ohio's past comes alive at Canal Fulton's Olde Canal Days celebration

A bit of Ohio's history comes to life with activities like a ride on a horse-drawn canal boat and Civil War re-enactment demonstrations when visitors attend the annual Olde Canal Days Festival in Canal Fulton, Ohio on Thursday, July 10, Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12. It is approximately a 55 minute drive from Cleveland.

Olde Canal Days Festival This free 3-day family-friendly festival offers a variety of history-oriented activities that the whole family can enjoy in addition to other activities like amusement rides, arts & crafts, beauty pageants and live musical entertainment.

One of the highlights of the Olde Canal Days Festival is the chance to take a canal boat ride down an original section of the Ohio- Erie Canal on the St. Helena III canal boat, a replica of an original canal boat that first ventured down the canal more than 100 years ago. Pulled by two Percheron horses, the St. Helena III can carry 60 passengers at a time on its 2 mile route round trip on the canal.

Canal boat rides will be offered on Saturday, July 12 at 4 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. The rides depart from the Boat Dock in Heritage Park. It is likely that the rides will include a Civil War Capture Re-enactment.

Civil War buffs can also pay a visit to Heritage Park to see cannon ball demonstrations.

Be sure to check out the Civil War historical displays and exhibits at the Olde Canal Days Museum and at other historical sites..

Live entertainment will be provided by various groups including Gary Shreve & Memphis Prowlers (an Elvis tribute band), Brighter Side, the Bel Airs, Outlaw, The Hitmen and Out of Sequence.

Of course, there will be lots and lots of vendors offering beverages and food for purchase.

Don't miss the Grande Parade being held on Saturday at 11 a.m. and the big bang of fireworks at St. Helens Heritage Park on Saturday evening at dusk.

Admission to the Olde Canal Days Festival is free. Cost for the amusement rides is $1 per ticket. Kiddie rides require 2 tickets and adult rides require 3 tickets per ride. Hours for the Festival are 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturday.
