Ohio's best high school baseball player: Cameron Varga

With the high school baseball season finally getting started in Ohio, it presents an opportunity for the great players from around the state to showcase their talents. The state of Ohio, and especially the Cincinnati area, has shown the ability to produce not only great high school talent, but talent that projects to higher levels of college and professional baseball.

The year 2014 is no different

The best players in the state reside in the Cincinnati area, with numerous players committed to Division I colleges. From the always powerful Cincinnati Moeller, to the smaller schools in the area, such as Lebanon and Loveland, scouts are flocking to see the next up and coming crop of talent. One player has stood out in the Class of 2014, and he has all the potential in the world to be a household name the next 15 years.

Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy's Cameron Varga

Why Varga? Well, just take one look at his high school pitching line from last season:

64 innings pitched, just 22 hits allowed, just 14 walks, 148 strikeouts, and a 0.21 ERA. For all of you Sabermetric people out there, his WHIP (walks + hits/innings pitched) is .5625. That is unheard of. Anything under a WHIP of 1.00 is considered to be outstanding, and Varga's is almost half that. Ridiculous.

So far this season, in his first two starts, Varga has thrown 12 innings, struck out 32, and has walked only two. During his starts, there can be a plethora of people behind the backstops with radar guns, charting every pitch.

Some of Varga's highlights include:

  • First team All-State
  • Fastball sits in the low to mid 90's, with a sharp breaking curveball and developing change up
  • Was named 1st team at the prestigious Perfect Game high school showcase, where he was grouped with the best players from around the country
  • Named to the first team at the Perfect Game showcase for underclassmen in 2013 and 2012
  • Has already committed to the University of North Carolina
  • His summer travel team is the Midland Redskins, one of the best travel teams in the country
  • Has trained at the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida
  • He already has his own baseball card
  • Ranked as the top player in Ohio by Prep Baseball Report
  • Ranked anywhere from #10 to #30 in the National high school player rankings
  • Projects as a first round draft pick in June MLB draft

Another reason why Varga is thought of in such high regard is that he has only been pitching for two years. He was a shortstop up until two years ago. Many scouts believe he is a "high ceiling" type prospect, meaning the best is yet to come with further development.

Come June, Varga will have a huge decision to make.... The biggest decision Varga will have to make this season is not deciding to throw a 2-2 slider with runners on base. It will be after he is drafted in June. Being a first round pick, the money and signing bonus associated with being drafted that high surely will be tempting. Since he has committed to North Carolina, if he forgoes the major leagues this June, he will have to stay at North Carolina for three years before being eligible to be drafted again.

Wouldn't we all want to have that decision to make?

The first order of business for Varga and the rest of the Eagles of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is to win the Ohio state championship. Last season, they were upset by rival Hamilton Badin 1-0 in the tournament. They are currently ranked as the top team in Ohio in Division III.

State championship or no state championship, Cameron Varga has a bright future ahead of him
