The Ohio prison suicide rate continues to rise as the year comes to a close. So far in 2013 ten inmates have committed suicide during their incarceration, the highest since 2007 when 11 inmates committed suicide. Prison officials have commissioned a study to determine the cause and what precautions are needed. The correctional officer union and the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio are placing the blame on the overpopulation of the system. Ohio’s prison population was designed to hold 38,579 offenders. The current population is 50,545 (Ohio-Northeast Ohio Media Group, 11/22/2013).
