The Ohio Supreme Court has decided today that Robert Van Hook will die on March 12, 2015 for killing David Self.
In 1985, Van Hook attempted to rob Self, whom he met in a gay bar. The robbery turned into a brutal murder as Van Hook strangled and stabbed Self. Although Van Hook claimed temporary insanity, the jury didn’t buy the claim and convicted him.
Ironically, this is the second time Van Hook has been sentenced to die. After he was originally sentenced to die, a federal appeals court reversed the decision to execute Van Hook on grounds that he had inadequate legal representation.
Four years ago, the Ohio Supreme Court wrote an opinion rejecting the appeals court decision. The justices felt that Van Hook clearly had adequate counsel.
Van Hook also had a history of luring gay men into secluded areas and then robbing them.
