Ohio governor Kasich gives reprieve to death row inmate

Ohio Gov. John Kasich gave an 8-month reprieve for the execution of convicted murderer, Gregory Lott, scheduled to die in Southern Ohio Correctional Facility on Mar. 19 after a botched execution resulted in a lawsuit filed by the executed killer's family.

Dennis McGuire was executed on Jan. 16 and the combination of two drugs used in the lethal injection may have caused McGuire to suffer for 26 minutes which is the longest in the history of any Ohio execution. McGuire writhed in pain, gasped, snorted and raised himself up against his restraints several times during the nearly half hour execution.

Following the execution McGuire's family filed a lawsuit against the state for cruel and unusual punishment. Several guards came forward in the ever building controversy to say that McGuire was coached by his attorney and said that he was told to dramatize his execution to stop further executions of inmates.

Gregory Lott set an 82-year-old man on fire during a break-in and left the man to die. Kasich's ruling will delay the execution for 8-months while an investigation into the incident continues and the execution of Lott is set for Nov. 19.
