Kenneth Biros is set to be executed Tuesday in Ohio and the case has caused much controversy over the past few months. Ohio recently changed its execution policies after Kenneth Biros contested the three-drug vein injection because of a September 15 execution that went awry and had to be stopped because they could not find suitable veins. The court responded with a change in its protocol; now they will use a one-drug vein injection with a backup two-drug muscle injection.
The new policy took effect November 30 and Kenneth Biros is the first execution scheduled. According to Biros' attorney this will be a “human experimentation, pure and simple,” the Associated Press reported.
The Ohio, September 15 attempted execution of Romell Broom was stopped when executioners painfully hit muscle and bone while making 18 attempts to reach a suitable vein.
Kenneth Biros, 51, was convicted of stabbing, beating and strangling Tami Engstrom 91 times in 1991. He dumped parts of Engstrom’s body in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Biros admitted to the killing and said it was during a drunken rage, the Associated Press reported.
34 states still have the death penalty in place, but it is rarely used. Utah is one of those states, but only six people have been executed since 1976. Ten people are currently on death row and are being held in Draper at the state prison. Firing squad is the current method of execution if lethal injection is held unconstitutional.
