Ohio community garden helps Feeding America

Tucked away behind the College of Mount St. Joseph in Delhi, Ohio is a little treasure. It’s called the Hillside Community Garden. It’s making a difference for area residents.

This past spring when Feeding America asked small farms and gardeners to help fight hunger, Hillside really stepped up to the plate. Their actions meant highly nutritious food for local families in need. Hillside recently gave out hundreds of edible plants at the Delhi Food Pantry. In addition, free seeds and planting advice were made available.

The response was fantastic. Hillside reported afterwards, "So many appreciative folks eager to get their hands in the soil and grow some food!"

The goal of the Hillside Garden is to grow healthy food, but also to educate. By doing so at the food pantry, they can help others grow their own food. Hillside is a project in collaboration with the College of Mount St. Joseph.

The Delhi Food Pantry is part of Feeding America's network that fights hunger across the country. The food pantry is a member agency of the Freestore Foodbank, the largest hunger relief organization in the Cincinnati area.

Like any food pantry they need donations to get by. The spring and summer months though are often the toughest times to get this help. Community members stepping forward is the key. Getting highly nutritious food is a huge plus.

Feeding America's CEO Bob Aiken says, "We work very hard to get fresh fruits and vegetables to millions of Americans living at risk of hunger throughout our nation, and we are extremely grateful to agricultural producers, farmers, the food and grocery industries, and individuals who donate millions of pounds of fresh produce to us each season. But more is needed."

With over 49 million Americans suffering from hunger, help is needed from all corners. The Hillside Community Garden has just given us an example of ways you can fight hunger in America.

The Hillside Garden’s director is Amy Stross. You can learn more about the Garden by visting its web site. and facebook page.
