Ohio church shooting leaves man dead after Easter celebration

An Ohio church shooting has left one man dead and another in custody. The incident took place on March 31, 2013 outside Hiawatha Church-God in Christ, a place of worship in Ashtabula, Ohio. The deceased man is 52-year-old Richard Riddle, and the alleged shooter is his son, according to Yahoo! News.

The tragic Ohio church shooting happened at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Sunday after Easter mass was held at the church. It is particularly sad that a man allegedly shot his father to death on a day when Christians everywhere were celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Officials have not disclosed any information about the alleged shooter's potential motives.

Panicked parishioners phoned 911 from within Hiawatha Church-God in Christ after hearing the gunshot or gunshots. Some people also witnessed the man brandishing a gun and behaving erratically. Authorities initially worried that they were facing a mass shooting after dispatchers received multiple phone calls reporting the incident, however, Riddle was the sole victim.

Local police responded to the scene of the Ohio church shooting while authorities from at least six other agencies rushed to assist. FOX News reported that the body of the victim will undergo an autopsy at Cuyahoga County coroner's office, but County Coroner Pamela Lancaster has already confirmed that the bullet wound was "immediately fatal."
