Ohio church hosting televised SB5 debate this weekend

EmpowerU and Joy Community Church in Cincinnati, Ohio will be welcoming Steve Lazarus and Dr. Kelly Kohls to a Debate on SB5/Issue 2, with Channel 5’s Jack Atherton as Moderator on Satruday, October 15, 2011. Debating for repeal of SB5 will be Steve Lazarus, an attorney representing many police and fire unions in the Cincinnati area. Debating against the repeal of SB5 is Dr. Kelly Kohls, founding member of Educate Ohio, a Warren County Precinct Captain, a School Board member, and former teacher.

Stephen S. Lazarus is a principal in the law firm of Hardin, Lazarus & Lewis, LLC. Mr. Lazarus is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Law (J.D. 1988), focusing his practice on the representation of public safety for employees and their unions. His representation encompasses contract negotiations, pre-disciplinary hearings and disciplinary appeals, lay-offs and job abolishment, and litigation and appeals related to promotional examinations and civil service rules. Mr. Lazarus also defends law enforcement officers and firefighters against allegations of civil rights violations. For over twenty years, Mr. Lazarus has acted as an advocate for public safety employee unions in hundreds of labor arbitrations through the negotiation impasse procedure, disciplinary appeals, and contract interpretation.

Dr. Kelly Kohls (Ph.D., R.D.) is currently on the Sprinboro Community City School Board of Education. She was elected in 2010, and is in her second year of service. Dr. Kohls is a founding member of Educate Ohio, a group of like-minded school board members from across the state. Dr. Kohls is a Republican central committee member, elected in May 2010. Dr. Kohls taught in public universities for ten years, followed by fifteen years in private practice. Dr. Kohls has five children in public schools, and remains concerned about the direction of both content and financial resources in public schools.
