Only two states sent more soldiers into battle than Ohio during the Civil War: New York and Pennsylvania. Our state had a strong presence among all branches of the military, including several of historical significance such as the United States Colored Troops. Within the archive's holdings you will find records pertaining to military life such as draft records, prisoner lists, and officers’ records as well as items such as diaries, photographs, and personal letters. These items can add depth and give additional details that will carry your family history beyond names and dates into a picture of humanity and life. For those wanting an introductory lesson in order to learn how to begin this type of research, the Kelton House and Garden will be presenting Finding Your Past: Basic Training for Your Civil War Ancestor Search on November 5, 2011. Intermediate to advanced researchers may be interested in a more detailed learning experience. The Ohio Historical Society and the Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society have teamed up for a fascinating look at military records. In a workshop titled Family History Research in the War of 1812 and the Civil War, participants will learn about the three divisions of military records, how to use these in genealogical research, and how to access the documents held in the Archives/Library.
