Ohio and Kentucky are coming together to help horses in need

GNU V1.2 ~ Shawn Jones  "Horse in a pasture." Not one from the article.

Chad Moore of Tate Township in Ohio was arrested for animal cruelty and abandonment and remains in jail. A farrier came out to treat the horses feet and noticed three dead horses on the property. He then called the animal control officers. They came out with the Humane Society to assess the situation. The took the six horses that were still alive, a pony and a donkey. Two of the horses they took had to be humanly euthanized due to their severe malnutrition. They were just too weak to make it and they felt this way was the most humane thing for them. Animal control had been first called to Mr. Moore’s home ten months earlier for a dead horse. But no one check up on this man again and three other horses died.

This news has prompted other horse lovers in the area to come together and form a response group. This group plans to create a telephone hot line and a Web site so people that see a horse in dire need can let the group know. The members would work with local authorities (animal control or police officers) to look into the horses condition and see if it warrants an arrest for cruelty to the horses. Now if the local authorities in Ohio were busy at the time and could not get to the case in a timely manner the group is going to rely on the Ohio Revised Code Section 1717.13, that states “When, in order to protect any animal from neglect, it is necessary to take possession of it, any person may do so.”

They have already held their first meeting to see what kind of turn out they would receive and people were from Kentucky, Mason, Brown County and also someone from Chillicothe showed up to hear about the group. They are holding their next meeting at 6:30 pm on Saturday the 23rd at the American Legion Hall in Batavia Township. That is at 2215 Batavia-Williamsburg Pike (Old Ohio 32). The name of the group will be discussed and selected at this meeting. Their goal with this group will be to help horses that are suffering from neglect and abuse to prevent such tragedies as in the Moore case.
