There is a multitude of family-friendly fun, historical and educational activities awaiting all who venture to the annual Fort Fest being held in Fort Jennings, Ohio on Friday, August 16, Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18 as the small town commemorates the role it played in the War of 1812. It is approximately a 3 hour drive from Cleveland.
A Bit About Fort Jennings Located along the banks of the Auglaize River, the original fort was built by Colonel William Jennings (the leader of a regiment of Kentucky riflemen) who was ordered by General William Henry Harrison to build a road in the area and to establish a fort. During the War of 1812, boats, wagons, army stores and troops passed through Fort Jennings en route to major battle actions.
Fort Fest Paying tribute to Fort Jennings' rich military history, Fort Fest will feature demonstrations by the 2nd Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Militia, tours of a military encampment and village and a battle reenactment (on Sunday at 3 p.m.).
Visitors will get the opportunity to participate in an 1812 Tomahawk Throwing Contest on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Cost for registration is $5 per person and includes a Tomahawk and Knife Throwing exhibition and instruction by expert throwers. Ages 5 and up are eligible to participate in the contest.
Activities include an 1812 Dance Workshop, horse-drawn history tours, a Native American presentation, a chance to see the Lima Company "Eyes of Freedom" display and the Ohio MIA/POW Wall.
In honor of all military eras, Fort Fest will also feature military vehicle/equipment displays, a military vehicle procession, an Ohio National Guard Museum display and a Hometown Heroes exhibit.
One featured attraction at Fort Fest is the chance for visitors to take a ride in a real HUEY 369 helicopter.
Fort Fest also offers a car show, a parade, mower races, duck races, kids' rides and games, a fort building contest, a Poker Run and old time baseball games.
Free musical entertainment will be provided by Nashville Crush and Fiddle Stix (made up of historical musicians).
There will be plenty of food and beverages available for purchase.
Hours for Fort Fest are 9 a.m. - 1 a.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
