Oh you beautiful dolls, part 2: Paul McCartney and band immortalized in Russia

Fans in Russia gave Paul McCartney a surprise gift a few minutes before the show he played in Moscow on Wednesday.  Beatles.ru, a community of Russian-speaking fans with more than 20,000 members in Russia and around the world, presented the former Beatle and his band with a traditional Russian matryoshka doll.

Commonly referred to in the West as nesting dolls, this is a set of dolls of increasing sizes placed one inside the other.  The gift was a similar one as was given to Ringo Starr and his band in June.

"We saw how Ringo and his band mates was impressed, and decide to do quite the same job for Paul," Alexey Bogaevsky of Beatles.ru told us by email.

The largest doll features a picture of Paul McCartney. Inside the McCartney doll are smaller dolls depicting the members of Paul's band - Brian, Rusty, Wix and Abe. Brian Ray's doll also featured his dog, Charlie.

The dolls set was again designed by Russian painter Gregory Don. Each doll was inscribed with each band member's name. Paul's doll also has the words "From Beatles.ru Fan Club Moscow, Russia, December 2011."

Bogaevsky said a personal meeting was arranged with Paul McCartney. "As we see, he was very pleased with this gift. Tour photographer M.J. Kim have made some photos of Paul and us together," he said. McCartney was also to sign some memorabilia.

"We hope that the souvenir will be a lasting reminder of the 2011 tour for Paul," Bogaevsky says.
