Children waiting for the return of of a jolly old man, delivering presents for every child that was good for that year. They try to stay awake hoping to hear reindeer hoofs on their roof, that being a clue that Santa was on his way into the house. Their plan is to rush down to catch a glimpse of the jolly old elf stuffing stockings and leaving their presents under the tree. But, unfortunately, the excitement is too much for them, and they fall asleep. Another year goes by, and another missed opportunity. Disappointed the plan for the next year.
There is a parallel here to our spiritual walk. The world is waiting for someone to come to earth and deliver them from the evils that plague it. They want peace, prosperity, and joy, but many groups won't have it. Yet the world still seeks relief. There was one who came, over 2000 years ago to give that relief to us in the form of salvation, but most of the world rejected Him as nut case. Very few held on to his promises, and promoted His ideals. Yet the world still seeks peace and joy.
If we would be like children and wait in the same excitement, without falling asleep spiritually, the second coming of Jesus would have the same effect. We would wait, excitedly, every year, for Him to come and give us those presents we waited so long for. He did leave is a gift the first time He came, that was the gift of eternal life. All we had to do is accept it. Then once that was accepted, we are to wait excitedly for His next appearance. In the mean time, we are to pass the gift around to give others the opportunity to accept it. Most have fallen asleep, however, because they grown weary of waiting.
Let us take a lesson from the children. Keep the excitement going, One day, and it may be soon, He will return hoping to find us awake. If we sleep, we will lose the opportunity to share in the joy with the rest of Heaven. Let us take this lesson to heart : watch and pray,
