Oh! My Aching Head!

The large number of people who suffer from migraines will be happy to find out there are all natural remedies available which will assist with relieving the symptoms of this particular affliction.  "According to the National Headache Foundation, more than 29.5 million Americans have migraines". ~

A migraine headache usually presents first with flashes of lights,black spots or having partial views of objects.  Other symptoms include intense pain behind one or both eyes or in the temple area.  Light , sound and smell sensitivity are common effects of a migraine as well.  Migraine headaches come on suddenly. "The head and neck muscles, reacting from continuous stress, become overworked. The tight muscles squeeze the arteries and reduce the blood flow. Then, when the person relaxes suddenly, the constricted muscles expand, stretching the blood vessel walls. With each heart beat, the blood pushes through these vessels and expands them further, causing intense pain". ~

Reasons for migraine headaches include;

  • Diet - the most common factor for triggering a migraine
  • Stress - learn to relax and develop coping mechanisms to handle stress
  • Hormonal problems - typically with the onset of a period or may develop during menopause
  • Structural problems like a vertebral subluxation
  • Neuralgia (nerve pain) - in general the debilitating cause is underlying due to poor diet, an infection, lack of rest or an osteopathic condition

The first line of fire for getting rid of a migraine headache is Feverfew.  It has become a common alternative to conventional medicine for migraine sufferers, especially in England.  Those of you who are using a blood thinning agent or are pregnant should consult an alternative healthcare provider before using Feverfew.

Another herb that is rising as a remedy for migraine relief is Butterbur. "The herb butterbur (Petasites hybridus) is a shrub-like plant that grows in northern Asia, Europe, and parts of North America. Extracts made from the herb have been used to treat migraines, stomach cramps, coughs, allergies, and asthma." ~   If you are allergic to ragweed then it is not recommended to use Butterbur for migraine relief.

Many studies point to 5-HTP for preventing migraines. 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a compound produced in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. It is used in the body to make the neurotransmitter seratonin and the hormone melatonin. Because this supplement affects the level of seratonin it has been used for migraine relief.

There are many other alternative methods for preventing migraines and some of them to consider are;

  • Other herbal remedies - willow, evening primrose, ginger, turmeric and thyme, etc.
  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Relaxation therapy
  • A diet journal and finally,
  • Proper rest and recreation

As always please consult with your alternative healthcare provider before self-diagnosing.   Migraines are not a simple diagnosis.
