Officials: 3 or 4 killers dumped bodies on Long Island; 5th victim identified

Long Island, NY - On Monday, prosecutors announced that at least eight victims found on a Long Island beach are the work of three killers -- maybe four. In addition, authorities have identified a fifth victim found among the ten sets of remains found.

“It is clear that the area in and around Gilgo Beach has been used to discard human remains for some period of time,” Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said. “As distasteful and disturbing as that is, there is no evidence that all of these remains are the work of a single killer.”

The first four set of remains that were found wrapped in burlap have been identified as women who advertised sexual services on Craigslist, thus, their killer has been dubbed by some to be the Craigslist Long Island serial killer or the Long Island serial killer.

Two additional women -- one identified as Jessica Taylor, the other still unidentified -- were found dismembered with their heads hands and feet found in the remote coastal area along Ocean Parkway, while their torsos were found in Manorville, an area in New York about 30 miles away from Gilgo Beach.

A skull and hands found were determined to belong to Taylor, whose body was found in Manorville in 2003. She also worked as a prostitute. The unidentified female's torso was discovered in 2000 in Manorville and her skull, hands and right foot were found during the Long Island search.

The remains of a female infant found wrapped in a blanket and an Asian male who endured trauma, may have been the victims of another killer, or their deaths may be completely unrelated. Investigators are still trying to determine what killed them.

In total, ten sets of remains have been discovered, which may not have occurred had it not been for the search for missing New Jersey woman, Shannan Gilbert, who vanished in the area in May 2010. She was not among the bodies found and her whereabouts remain unknown. Like most of the women found, Shannan also used Craigslist to offer prostitution services.

Investigators continue to try to identify the bodies found, however, the task is daunting as some of the bones discovered are believed to have been dumped in the area years ago.
