The Origin and History of the Universal Life Church

107 AD -- Origin of The
Universal Life Church Name

Within the Letter to the Smyrnaeans, it was St Ignatius of Antioch in 107 AD that made the first reference ever to the name of what would become the first Christian Church. St Ignatius in Greek referenced the Church name as Katholikos, which translates to Universal Church of the Life of Christ in English. Still today the United States Patent and Trademark Office views the name as proprietary to Christians and Catholics alike. Universal or Universal Life Church are revered Christian names steeped in the tradition of Christendom. They are and always will be Christian.

Today Antioch is known as Antakya, Turkey with an urban population of 216,960 and a district population of 470,833. St Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church, located in New York, NY. , well known for its soup kitchen, meal programs and hunger walks helping the less fortunate in New York City.

313 AD -- Legalization of Christianity With The Edict of Milan

Edict of Milan, a proclamation that permanently established religious toleration for Christianity within the Roman Empire. It was the outcome of a political agreement concluded in Milan between the Roman emperors Constantine I and Licinius in February 313. The proclamation, made for the East by Licinius in June 313, granted all persons freedom to worship whatever deity they pleased, assured Christians of legal rights (including the right to organize churches), and directed the prompt return to Christians of confiscated property.

325 - 381 AD -- Birth of The Roman Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church sourced their name from St Ignatius of Antioch just the same as all others who spun off the name. The exact date of the beginning of the Roman Catholic Church is indeterminable. While the belief system recognized as Christianity is in place by the first century, institutional structures developed over time. Nor is it possible to distinguish Catholicism as a separate tradition until it can be differentiated from other Christian traditions (most notably, Eastern Orthodoxy and Protestantism). Scholars recognize a variety of significant institutional, theological, and cultural markers in this development:

325 — Council of Nicea. The first post-apostolic ecumenical council of the Christian community at which Church leaders formed a creedal statement of belief recognized universally.

381 — First Council of Constantinople. This council amended and ratified the Nicene Creed, resulting in the version used by Christian churches around the world.

440-461 — Pope Leo I. Many historians suggest that Pope Leo is the first to claim universal jurisdiction over the worldwide Church, thus initiating the rise of the papacy, a uniquely Roman Catholic structure.

451 — The Council of Chalcedon. This is the first occasion of an institutional division within Christianity, as those who did not adhere to the conclusions of the Council (referred to as Oriental Orthodox) separated.

1054 — The Great Schism. Though the Eastern and Western branches of the Church had long been divided over theological, cultural, linguistic, and ecclesiological disputes, the separation was formalized in 1054, thus creating the first large-scale division within Christendom.

16th century — The term "Roman Catholic" is not generally used until the Protestant Reformation, and some historians see the Council of Trent (1545-1563) as a centralizing movement within Catholicism that enhanced the authority of Rome.

1959 AD -- Con Man, Crook & Self Proclaimed Messiah & King

Kirby Hensley, an illiterate self ordained and appointed minister/bishop turned away by the Southern Baptist and Pentecostal Churches began his own "Life Church" within his own garage.

1962 -- The same Kirby Hensley, who was also involved with Gabriel Green and The Universal Party (flying Saucer Party) incorporated his Life Church in California using Universal as a part of the name. Some claim he did so because he was not too smart of an individual. Some claim he did so to co-promote his Flying Saucer party affiliation and some they just said he did such because of his hatred toward Christians. The Hensley Universal Life Church is Anti-Christian, Anti-Bible, Anti-Jesus, Anti-Christ

Hensley Quotes:

Hensley: "Why sure, I'm a con man."

Among his more memorable comments:

* I always stand for freedom, food and sex. That's all there is. It sets people free.

* Jesus was a good actor.

* The Bible "is full of lies from one end to the other."

* It's a thin line dividing genius and idiot. I think I'm on the genius side.

* We're coming up on the 21st century and there's not one verse of Scripture in the Bible that will take you beyond the 20th century.

* I believe I was a comedian and two-bit lawyer (in an earlier life) because I've had more lawsuits than anybody.

* I just want to raise all the hell I can, and get all the kooks and what-have-you as churches; then they (the government) will have to tax them all.

1999 -- Kirby Hensley's death, Kirby's church hit with a million dollar fine and stripped of tax exempt church status by IRS for 25 years.
