Officers shot and killed a 30-year-old man Friday morning while investigating a report of a stolen motorcycle at an hotel in Atlanta.
The shooting happened around 10:15 a.m. at 2239 Powers Ferry Road in Atlanta, according to Cobb County police.
Investigators said uniform officers initiated an investigation of a stolen motorcycle, which was parked in the parking lot of the Extended Stay Hotel.
They tracked the alleged thief down to room 345, police spokesman Officer Mike Bowman said.
“A physical altercation ensued and the perpetrator produced a handgun which immediately caused the officers to be in fear for their lives,” Officer Bowman said. “An officer on scene, acting in self defense, was forced to fire his service weapon, striking the perpetrator.”
The suspect has been identified as Mr. John Alan Massey, of Marietta. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers involved in this incident have been placed on routine administrative leave. Officials have declined to release their names.
This investigation continues and anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call (770) 499-3945.
