Officers injured during Bellmore drug arrest

A Bellmore man was arrested Tuesday and charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting a drug-related arrest in an early morning scuffle, Nassau County police said.

First Precinct officers were on routine patrol around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, when they spotted Douglas Fromwiller, 48, of 2399 Elk Court, “crouched down between a building and a truck” near Newbridge Road and North Jerusalem Road, detectives said. As the officers approached, Fromwiller allegedly became combative with police, in an effort to “conceal crack cocaine in his mouth,” a news release said.

While attempting to take him into custody, the two officers and Fromwiller all fell between two parked cars “due to icing conditions.” One of the officers suffered a right hand fracture and was taken to an area hospital, police said.

Fromwiller was charged with second-degree assault, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday.
