An officer steals a watch from a Jared Jewelers in Florida in what is a somewhat surprising news report. On Feb. 8, The Canada Journal reported that Officer Kevin Burgs stole a $795 watch from a store in Pembroke Pines. Burgs, a nine-year veteran on the police force, was caught by surveillance cameras after he went back to he store he had just robbed to respond to the robbery call!
"The burglary was captured on video. And, according to a report, an employee reviewing the surveillance not only saw the thieves break in, but also eventually saw Officer Burg allegedly ganking (sic) a watch after he responded to the store’s call," reports The Canada Journal.
If an officer steals a watch, one would think that he would be immediately excused from his job, but while Burgs has been suspended, it's with pay and the department has chosen to wait out his trial before actually firing him, despite what was seen on the video footage.
Burgs, 36, has been charged with grand theft. Obviously if he is convicted, he will be out of a job. At this point a motive is unclear. The one watch that he stole wasn't that expensive but evidently he thought that it was worth it -- or that he could get away with it. Or both.
