With just two episodes left in the season, The Office producers, staff, and cast have not revealed Steve Carell's replacement as Michael Scott, manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. There was intense speculation that Will Ferrell would be the new boss, having taped four episodes that received praising reviews from television critics as well as fans of the popular NBC sitcom.
Will Ferrell has jokingly said that he would remain on the show for the next season. "Yes, I'm taking over," he told Entertainment Weekly in a brief interview back in March. "My character’s name is Deangelo Vickers, he loves the American Southwest, and he’s just kind of in his own way going to step into Michael Scott’s shoes and try to fill them. I’m friends with Steve and a fan of the show, and I just selfishly wanted to do one episode with him, and they pitched multiple ones, and I said, ‘That’d be great.’" When Entertainment Weekly asked if this could lead to a regular gig, Will replied "Yeah, a regular full-time gig."
But Ferrell has not signed on as Carell's permanent replacement on the show, according to The Office's executive producer Paul Lieberstein, who also plays the part of Toby on the show. Lieberstein recently has said that current show characters will apply for the management position, but Dunder Mifflin will not likely hire from within.
There is even more speculation about the replacement now that some big names will be making guest appearances on the season finale of the show. Such guest stars will be Will Arnett, Ray Romano, James Spader, Catherine Tate, and even box-office heavyweight Jim Carrey.
Steve Carell will not be in the final two episodes of the show, leaving fans and critics alike guessing who the next manager of Dunder Mifflin will be. It certainly appears that even the cast, writers, and producers of the hit sitcom are guessing as well.
