The past year has been tumultuous for the Memphis city animal shelter. Among some of the stories that emerged included information that some employees had ties to dog-fighting rings, a cat that died after spending many days inside of a shelter wall, and an investigation for cruelty on the very first day they opened at their new location.
The administrator has been fired. Multiple employees were unceremoniously let go. And the shelter has a terrible reputation to repair.
City officials recently offered to turn the shelter over for a private organization to take on the job and function as animal control services to the city.
According to reports, the proposal was to be discussed at a mandatory meeting on January 12th which would begin the turn-over process. But the date arrived and no one showed up to raise their hand. No organizations stepped forward. And the offer was revoked.
Now, city officials are preparing the move forward and hire yet another animal services administrator and even say they have mutliple qualified candidates.
