An off-duty Suffolk County police officer from Huntington was killed early Friday morning when his sport utility vehicle collided with a sanitation truck, Suffolk County police said.
17-year veteran officer Patrick Curley was driving westbound on Route 25 around, near Siracusa Boulevard in Commack around 3:33 a.m., when his vehicle collided with a garbage truck, detectives said. The Winters Brothers sanitation truck was “backing out of a business on Route 25,” a news release said.
The 40-year-old officer, who was assigned to the Second Precinct, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician’s assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office.
Officials said the driver of the garbage truck, James Jarosch, 59, was not injured.
In accordance with standard procedure, the SUV was impounded for a safety check. According to police, the garbage truck was inspected at the scene by the Motor Carrier Safety Unit. Jarosch was issued summonses for unsafe backing and equipment violation, cops said.
