A group of teens picked a nice vehicle to carjack early Monday morning, but the wrong owner. The off-duty Detroit officer turned his own weapon on the armed teens and, concerned for his own life, shot and killed one of the assailants.
The unnamed cop was parking his black Dodge Charger in a lot at the Sutton Place Apartments in the 23000 block of Riverside Drive, near 9 Mile Road and Lahser in Southfield.
As he exited the vehicle at about 2:00 a.m. this morning, two armed teens approached him. It is not yet clear whether they wanted the Charger’s chrome rims or the entire car.
According to Southfield Lt Nick Lucia the victim was placed in fear for his life. He drew his own weapon and fired 4-5 shots at a teen who was brandishing a .38 caliber revolver. The 17-year-old suspect died at the scene.
The dead suspect’s name has not yet been released.
The other suspect dropped his weapon and ran. He was later arrested by the Southfield police, along with another teen police think was involved. Both are 16, and residents of Southfield.
Police report that a fourth teen was collared Monday afternoon in connection with the incident.
